What is this?
This six-week-long pilot program is the start of a National Science Foundation funded project towards engaging students in creating educational content about artificial intelligence for social media. Led by Professor Casey Fiesler and graduate student Joanna Mendy in Information Science, we are recruiting a small group of undergraduate Information Science majors to participate in March and April 2025.
Who are you looking for?
For this pilot program, we are looking for Information Science majors with an interest in artificial intelligence and/or education and/or social media. Ideally, we want participants who represent different interests and skillsets—some who already know about AI and some who know very little, and some who have experience with social media content creation and communication and some with very little. Or if you just want to learn about all of this and try something new, that’s fine too!
What would I be doing?
During March and April (3/7 to 4/25 excluding Spring Break) we will be meeting once a week in person for learning, planning, and creating as well as meeting in small groups outside this time. By the end of the six weeks, we will be launching a social media presence with your content to help teach the world about AI! (Not sure what this might look like? Though video is only one potential medium, here are some examples though also imagine more creative possibilities.) You will also have the opportunity to contribute to a research project aimed at learning more about the educational needs of young people on this topic.
In order to participate, you will need to be available for our weekly meetings on Fridays 1:30pm to 3pm during this time. The expectation is that you would spend at least 5 hours per week on this project.
Is this a paid position?
Participants in this pilot program will be paid $600 at its conclusion. This is intended to be the equivalent of about $20/hour for your time.

Isn’t there something really weird about that image above?
Yes, there is! The header page for this website was created using generative AI via ChatGPT 4o. If you spotted the problems with that image and think that it would be interesting to teach other people about these kinds of things, then that might be your sign to apply. :)
