Online Communities
Here in the Internet Rules Lab, one of our areas of research is online communities (both the good and the bad), with a focus on platforms, privacy, social norms, marginalized and stigmatized experiences, and community. This work spans from Fiesler’s dissertation research on copyright in creative communities to further work on online fandom led by PhD alum Brianna Dym, to recent work on Black Twitter, federated social media, online communities for fat people, and health support communities.
Current Researchers: Professor Casey Fiesler, PhD students Blakeley Hoffman Payne, Faye Kollig, and Matt Nicholson; MS student Joanna Mendy
